Thurs June 19th @ 7:30 pm BARA Club Meeting. Program: FIELD DAY FIELD DAY FIELD DAY!!
Lest We Forget - June 20, 21, 22 2008 in the St. Joseph-Benton Harbor area from 7:00 AM Friday June 20 until approximately 9:00 PM Sunday June 22.
BARA will be providing backup communications so, we want to get most of the needed operators identified by our May 8th meeting where we will have a sign-up form. There are
several areas which will need hams so I will detail the operation so you can think of how and where you will be able to help. Since this project will run three days with “round the
clock” coverage, there will be plenty of opportunities for you to signup. The LWF group has identified the shifts will run from 0800 to 1700, 1700 to 0100 and 0100 to 0800 each
day. Since we feel an eight hour shift is too long for most people, we will be cutting these shifts in half. A four hour shift is much easier for most of us to fit into our lives. Hopefully,
looking at four hour shifts, many of our people will be ably to take several shifts over the three day period. So, in reviewing all of the following, where ever I call for one shift (7 to 9 hours)
please consider two four hour shifts. There will be a “net control” station operating in the Conference Room of the Airport Terminal Building which will need two operators on the 0800 to
1700 shift on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and one operator on each of the other two shifts on Friday and Saturday nights That’s a total of 10 shifts. There will also be a “roving vehicle”
(which will be supplied by LWF, probably something like a golf cart) with a ham with a handheld radio roaming around the Airport covering all three shifts from Friday morning to Sunday
evening which will probably run until about 2100. That’s a total of 7 shifts. We will need one ham with a handheld shadowing the Director of LWF from 0800 to 2100 each day. That’s a
total of three shifts On Saturday we will need a vehicle (to be supplied by the operator) with that operator with a handheld to be stationed at the Whirlpool Satellite Parking Lot near
Tiscornia Park. This person will probably need to go down to the beach and around the area so cannot use only the mobile unit in the car. This will be from 0800 to about 1400.
This will be one shift. As you can see from the above, we will need all the hams we can get to fill these 21 shifts of seven to nine hours each (which, at our four hour shifts, will take
at least 42 people). If you know of any hams that would also like to volunteer, please send Char an e-mail at kc8tse@arrl.net. All operations are planned to use the 146.720 repeater.
